birdy7 is software for managing renewable energy systems from natcon7. Together with a small team I was responsible for developing a clear, consistent and user-centric design that makes the datasets easy to consume, usable and understandable. We developed a flexible design system and design guidelines for further development.

CHALLENGE

My team had to design an usercentric software to manage decentralized renewable energy systems like solar, wind, hydro or biomass power plants from scratch. 

Include features like real time diagnostics and monitoring as well as reporting and inbox to speed up the management workflow. 

SOLUTION

We designed a smart multiscreen surveillance center with customizable presets for each user group. 

The modern design carries visual metaphores to the Industrial Age (eg. with fonts like Craft Gothic and Engineer), where controlling machines was a “hands on” job. Birdy7 focusses on datavizualisation to help quickly understand what’s going on and be able to act immediatly.

It is available in light and dark mode with highly individualizable configuration options.

TECHNICAL ILLUSTRATIONS

I have never before worked on a project where understanding the actual topic was that cruicial to success. For example you cannot illustrate specific parts of a wind turbine if you haven’t understood how they work. That way I learned a lot about renewables which is great.

DATA VISUALIZATION

Users of our software need to deal with tons of data and therefore we included many different ways to visualize it - from a variety of diagram types to choose from to small custom made icons.
